Family

May 26th, 2009

This year I watched as people around me had their families torn apart at the seams. I saw a brother loose his only big sister, a daughter loose her mom to cancer, a wife loose her husband to a heart attack, and witnessed the after effects of a mom who had lost her son. I have always known that anything can happen at any given time and that the people you thought you had forever with could vanish without even a goodbye. But, suddenly all that has become so real.

I don’t necessarily celebrate international day of families, but to me the idea behind it is amazing. A family is something some people might take for granted, push away until they wish they could have one more day to say I love you. I think international day of families is reminding everyone of what they already know. Your family is there for you. Always. That you should make sure you take the time and tell them you appreciate them, that you love them. Because before you know it, they can be gone. Whether you have an “ideal family” or not, I think we should always find time to let them know we care.

Panda Bears

May 26th, 2009

I would definitely rather see a panda bear in the wild rather than in the zoo. Panda bears are an endangered species, and I don’t feel like keeping them in captivity is helping that problem. I feel like putting animals in captivity goes against there nature and the way they should be living their lives. I’m sure they don’t thoroughly enjoy being looked at all day and never having the freedom of roaming around wherever they would like to go.

Here is a video of panda bears in the wild.

Shades of Yellow

May 5th, 2009

There’s something about the color yellow that brightens my day. Maybe it’s the way it manages to shine next to anything. Like a sunflower hidden in the depth of tall green grass as bumble bees with their yellow stripe search for nectar.

Or maybe yellow reminds me of my big fluffy dog who always greets me when I walk through my door with big puppy dog eyes and a goofy retriever smile.

Or maybe it makes me hopeful for the lazy carefree days of Summer to return. As the blinding yellow sun fills the sky and warms the Earth.

Earth Day

April 16th, 2009

To be honest I have never celebrated Earth Day and never really knew much about it. However, as I am being asked to write about it I have had time to really think about Earth Day and how important it is to our planet. Everyone has at some point or another heard the three words: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Not enough people take this serious enough though. In my ceramics class, our teacher was telling us how in the ocean there are plastic bottles floating that altogether make up the size of Texas. As to whether this is a absolute true fact, I don’t honestly know. The problem is I have no problem believing it. It is so simple to recycle used bottles, or paper, or anything really. Yet, people don’t do it often enough. So my plan not only for Earth Day, but for the other 364 days of the year is to make sure I reduce, reuse, and recycle more, because even just a few less people being wasteful can make a difference right?

Blog #7 Slice of Life

October 31st, 2008

With the sun beating down on our necks it was no suprise when Jaxon, the three year old boy i was babysitting, asked for a drink. The park we had been playing at had one water fountain which was probably a foot above his head. With his small voice he said “Jordyn will you please hold me up to get a drink?”

“Of course.” I replied.

I lifted him up until his mouth was even with the spout and pressed the button to make the water come out. His head which had been leaning down towards the water flew back with suprise. “Did you see that?” he asked.

“Yes!” Who could have missed a frog jumping out of the very place you’d been about to get a drink from?

“Can we take a picture?” He questioned, suddenly forgetting about his thirst.

Blog #6 Podcasting: A Literary Connection

October 19th, 2008

I chose a podcast about the book, The Giver by Lowis Lowry. This podcast starts with dialogue that instantly makes you start asking questions. Throughout the whole podcast there is this sense of mystery that even the music demonstrates. They mention how people don’t know what pain is and that everyone in the community is perfect. All the questions and suspense they create is the reason I would really want to read this book. I also liked this podcast a lot because the voices were easy to listen to. The people sounded like they actually believed they were the character in the book, which made the dialogue very believable. This podcast definitely made me want to read this book.
